“Big Maggie” by John B.Keane
Big Maggie is a modern Irish classic set in 1960s rural Ireland and is a compelling portrait of a woman who is determined to take control of her life following the death of her husband. Shocking for its time-the play premiered in 1969 – Keane painted a portrait of the dark side of Irish family life with Maggie as a complex figure, far from the clichés of the nurturing ‘Irish Mammy’. It is an enormously entertaining and often funny play but with an underlying sense of sadness and tragedy.

History of the Group
Corofin Dramatic Society has a long proud theatrical history. Founded in 1950 we continually strive to improve our dramatic standards. A major milestone occurred in 2008 when we won the confined All-Ireland finals with our production of the Beauty Queen of Leenane. A long time ambition was achieved in 2012 when we tread the boards of the Dean Crowe stage in Athlone with ‘The Subject was Roses’ by Frank D. Gilroy. We were placed 3rd that year (no mean achievement for our first appearance). We have qualified for athlone on three occassions since then, most recently in 2017 with our production of the Cripple of Inishmaan. We have also been active participants on the oneact circuit down through the years winning the one-act confined all-ireland finals in 1993 and 2012.
